Alabama daycare worker charged with infant’s murder; here’s what we know

Four days after an infant died in a small Alabama town daycare, one of the women entrusted to care for the child has been charged with the baby’s murder.

The incident started Monday when just before 1 p.m. police in the small town of Demopolis along with emergency medical personnel were called to the Tender Years Day Care located at 1001 Maria Avenue in reference to an unresponsive infant.

After arriving on scene, EMS personnel immediately began CPR and transported the infant to Whitfield Memorial Hospital.

Once the infant arrived at the hospital, emergency room staff continued to revive the infant, but were unsuccessful.

The infant was pronounced dead at the hospital and its bodyd later transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.

On March 29, after reviewing video footage and speaking with personnel from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, a warrant for murder was obtained for the arrest of the daycare worker, Versa Mae Simmons, 68, of Demopolis.

She was arrested and transported to the Marengo County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
