A shotgun delivered to an attorney’s office as part of a divorce settlement prompted a scare Friday as workers mistakenly thought the weapon was part of a threat and called authorities.

An unidentified woman took the gun into an office building in suburban Birmingham as one of the steps in fulfilling her obligations in a divorce case, authorities said. Someone who saw the gun and didn’t realize what was going on notified police, prompting a quick response from officers.

News outlets reported that medics and police from three agencies converged on a Synovus Bank building because of the possibility of an active shooter before determining there was no threat. No shots were fired and no one was harmed.

Sgt. Joni Money of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office called the whole thing a false alarm.
