A construction trench collapsed Tuesday trapping three Alabama workers, killing one of them.

The accident happened in the city of Eutaw Tuesday night as workers were doing sewer line work in the Branch Heights subdivision in Eutaw, Alabama.

City worker Tony Rice and two other workers were in the trench when it collapsed. The other two workers managed to get out of the trench but Rice was trapped the collapsed area.

Despite the efforts of first responders called from around the region, they were not able to rescue Rice as the collapsed area began filling up with water and sewage.

Rice’s body was recovered before sunrise Wednesday morning.
