In 1991 27-year-old Elizabeth Spence was reported as a missing person from Lafayette, Alabama, on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Then Lafayette Police Chief Fred Lumpkin reported to the media, “For her to have gone anywhere without her family knowing about it was completely out of context.”

 

On Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1991, Elizabeth Spence’s vehicle, a Daihatsu Charade, was found by a Montgomery Patrol Unit in the parking lot of a department store on Atlanta Highway. The body was discovered unexpectedly after the vehicle was turned over to the Lafayette Police Department for inspection of evidence in Montgomery. Then Montgomery Police Information Spokesman Captain Wyatt Gantt reported that members from the Montgomery Police Department and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation were all present when the body was discovered in the trunk of the vehicle.

 

The investigation is now in the hands of the Montgomery District Attorney’s Cold Case Task Force.  Investigators are requesting information from anyone that may have lived in Lafayette or Montgomery that may have information to help solve this case.

 

Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is offering a $5,000 reward offered for any information that leads to any arrest(s) involved in the 1991 murder investigation of Elizabeth Spence.  The State of Alabama is offering $5,000 and the family is offering a $25,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of anyone involved with the murder of Elizabeth Spence.  The total reward is $35,000.
