A Florida man was killed Saturday when a small plane he was flying from Kentucky to Florida crashed in Alabama, the authorities said.

Elliott George Charles Leadlay, 74, of Merritt Island, Florida, died at the scene of the crash in Etowah County Saturday afternoon.

Etowah County deputies said they responded to the crash when they received a 911 call just before 1 p.m. The caller reported hearing what sounded like a plane crash in the area. Soon after a second caller reported finding the crash site in a field behind a home on the west side of the county.

Deputies found debris from the small plane scattered in the field, Bean said. Leadlay was dead at the scene.

Leadlay’s family told deputies that he was an experienced pilot with decades of flying. Leadley was flying back to Florida after visiting a friend in Kentucky, Bean said.

The sheriff’s office said the Federal Aviation Administration will assist with the investigation of the crash.
