New Year’s Eve shooting leaves 1 dead, 9 injured in Mobile, Alabama

A shooting during a New Year’s Eve celebration in downtown Mobile, Alabama, left one person dead and nine others injured, police said.

Mobile police were called to a shots fired report at approximately 11:14 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of Dauphin Street.

The shooting happened as downtown Mobile streets were packed with celebrants awaiting the city’a annual MoonPie Over Mobile event.

The identify of the dead victim, the conditions of those injured and the causes of the shooting were immediately unclear.

WKRG-TV quoted Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine who said police were investigating the shooting, but believed the perpetrators and at least the deceased person may have known one another.

Witnesses describe the scene as chaotic.
