An Alabama man has been charged with murder after he allegedly sold fentanyl to a man who later overdosed and died, sheriff’s investigators said.

Michael Elton Moseley, 45, was arrested Monday and charged with murder in the death of Brian Zewen, Mobile County Sheriff’s Office investigators said.

“We hope that it’s going to send a message to the other drug dealers as well. This defendant has been in trouble for many years for different things. Selling drugs, using drugs, domestic violence, things of this nature. This is a big-time charge now,” Sheriff Cochran said told FOX 10 news.

Deputies say Zewen’s mother called the sheriff after her son’s death and her belief about the cause of his death after Brian Zewen’s death in August.

Moseley’s arrest is the first case in Mobile County in which a felony murder charge has been made against the alleged source of the fentanyl, the sheriff’s office said.

“Fentanyl is now one of our biggest challenges on the streets and we are going to be very aggressive in fighting back,” said Sheriff Sam Cochran for the news release. “We are going after the seller, the person who sold to the seller, and then to the distributor. If you are selling fentanyl we are coming after you. If you sell it to someone and they die, we are coming after you with a felony murder charge. We have to stand together as a community and create awareness about this very powerful drug”.
