Alabama authorities said a Mississippi man drowned in the waters off Gulf Shores Sunday.

The man, identified as Darius Marquelle Smith, 23, of Amory, Mississippi, was recovered Sunday afternoon.

First responders attempted to revive him and he was taken to a Mobile hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gulf Shores fire and rescue crews said Smith and two other swimmers got in distress while swimming off Gulf Shores, Alabama. The other two people with Smith were successfully rescued.
