Alabama teen killed, another injured in ATV accident

An Alabama teenager was killed Monday when the ATV he was operating struck an embankment and flipped over, state troopers said.

The single-vehicle crash involving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) occurred at approximately 4:17 p.m. Monday, and claimed the life of a Jemison, Alabama, man.

Shawn A. Smith, 19, was fatally injured when the 2019 Honda Pioneer ATV he was operating left the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned. Smith was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash, was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene.

A 16-year-old juvenile, who was a passenger on the ATV, was injured and transported to a local area hospital for medical treatment.

The crash occurred on Chilton County 135 near Chilton County 1038, approximately two miles north of Jemison, in Chilton County. Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
