5-year-old child killed when SUV flips over into creek, state troopers say

A 5-year-old Alabama child was killed Monday morning when the SUV in which the child was struck a ditch and flipped into a creek, state troopers said.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 6:10 a.m. Monday, and claimed the life of a Locust Fork child.

The 5-year-old child was fatally injured when the 2014 GMC Yukon, the child was a passenger in, left the roadway and struck a ditch before the vehicle overturned into a creek.

The child was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Yukon, Karley B. Edwards, 35, of Locust Fork, was not using a seat belt, was injured and transported to UAB Hospital, in Birmingham for treatment.

The crash occurred on Alabama 79 near Peyton Lane, approximately 4 miles south of Locust Fork, in Blount County.
