An Alabama woman found clutching her ill newborn baby while a heroin needle was still sticking out of her arm has pleaded guilty to chemical endangerment of a child that resulted in death, a TV station reported.

Amanda Danielle Malpas, 36, admitted to taking heroin and methamphetamine while she was pregnant and was taking illicit drugs to dull the pain of birth, FOX-10 TV reported.

Malpas was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but all but three of those years was suspended.

She reportedly will begin her sentence in August upon completion of a drug addiction program.

Paramedics took the baby to a hospital, but the baby girl died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
