Alabama mom charged after allegedly forcing son out of car on way home, running him over, police say

An Alabama mother has been arrested after police allege she ran over her 7-year-old son after forcing him out of her car to walk home as punishment for getting in trouble at school.

Boaz police said Sarai Rachel James, 27, was charged with aggravated child abuse after the February 9 incident.

James allegedly stopped a short distance from the school where she picked up her son. After learning that her son got in trouble at school, she forced the child out of her vehicle and told him to walk the rest of the way home as punishment. Police said they lived approximately eight blocks from the school.

The boy reportedly tried to grab the car door’s handle and James accelerated, causing the boy to be pulled beneath the car and run over.

He was treated for only minor abrasions.

James was released on a $50,000 bond.

In addition, a 53-year-old woman who was inside James’ vehicle at the time with a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child.
