An Alabama man was killed just before midnight on Thursday when the ATV he was operating ran off the road and flipped over on him, state troopers said.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 11:52 p.m. Thursday, and claimed the life of an Enterprise, Alabama, man.

Jesse Duran Howell, 40, was fatally injured when the 2021 Polaris RZR all-terrain vehicle (ATV) he was operating left the roadway and overturned.

Neither Howell nor Deja Whitney Mathis, 33, of Daleville, who was a passenger, were using a seat belt at the time of the crash, state troopers said.

As a result, both were ejected from the ATV.

Howell was pronounced deceased at the scene and Mathis was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.

The crash occurred on Alabama 85, approximately half a mile north of Bellwood, in Geneva County.
