Alabama man killed, woman injured when car flips, state troopers said

An Alabama man was killed and a woman injured last week after the car in which they were riding veered off the road and overturned, state troopers said.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m. Sunday and claimed the life of an Altoona, Alabama, man, state troopers said Saturday.

Joel M. Hicks, 36, was critically injured when the 2009 Toyota Camry he was driving left the roadway and overturned.

Hicks was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected. Rita H. Quarles, 62, of Oneonta, a passenger in the Camry, was also not using a seat belt and was ejected.

Hicks and Quarles were both transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for medical treatment. Hicks later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at UAB Hospital.

The crash occurred on Blount County 29 near Rainbow Drive, approximately 4 miles south of Oneonta, in Blount County.
