An Alabama 15-year-old girl was killed and a 9-year-old child injured after a gun battle between two groups of people began on an interstate Monday, law enforcement officials said.

The shooting began on Interstate 165 in Prichard, Alabama, when what the local sheriff described as a “rolling gun battle” began with people firing at each other from vehicles.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said investigators are still working the case, but said he believes the two victims had nothing to do with the shootings and were simply innocent victims.

Burch told local media, “Two young people shooting at each other is bad enough, but when you have two innocent victims who had nothing to do with it that are shot and then one killed — it’s just unforgivable.”
