Alabama Skies: Wintry weather settling in for the next couple of days

It’s really interesting to see the top third of the state in a winter wonderland while the bottom third of the state is almost spring-like, and that’s just what will happen Monday.

While our northern counties are dealing with hazardous roadways with ice and snow, our coastal counties will be sunny and warm. That changes Monday night, however, as the arctic air makes its way southward, taking winter all the way to the beaches.

Our northern counties will have more of the same possible the next day or two. Some places in central Alabama will also begin having some icy road conditions, all depending on where the freezing line and precipitation meet.

South Alabama is likely to experience some icy conditions as detailed here from the National Weather Service in Mobile/Pensacola:

“Freezing rain is likely late Monday into early Tuesday morning. Minor ice accumulation is possible, generally for locations to the northwest of the I-65 corridor, with ice accumulation up to 0.05 inches likely (localized accumulation up to 0.10 inches possible). Slick and hazardous spots on sidewalks and roads, especially on bridges and overpasses. Only travel if necessary, keep your devices charged, check on neighbors, and bring pets indoors. If it’s icy outside, STAY INSIDE, don’t slip and slide.”

A couple tips: charge phones, battery packs, and laptops. Even if there’s an old laptop in the back of a closet, a fully-charged laptop can charge phones and other devices through the USB connections. Also, take caution driving, even if an area didn’t get any frozen precipitation. Freezing temps can cause black ice on roadways and sidewalks, especially on bridges.

North Alabama

Snow showers and sleet possible until mid-afternoon, then snow showers likely in the later afternoon. Wintry mix likely in the evening. High of 28 with a wind chill in the upper teens. Monday night, a wintry mix early, then snow overnight. Low of 14 with a wind chill as low as 1 degree.

Central Alabama

Winter weather advisory for western portions of central Alabama. Mostly cloudy with a chance of a rain shower. High of 42. A chance of rain or freezing rain in the evening, then freezing rain and sleet overnight. Low of 21 with wind gusts up to 20 miles per hour, making wind chills much lower.

South Alabama

Partly sunny with a high of 57. Increasing clouds overnight with a chance for rain. Low of 28. Depending on when precipitation falls and temperatures drop, rain could be mixed with some wintry precipitation.

Gulf Coast

Mostly sunny with a high of 64. Mostly cloudy overnight with a chance for showers in the evening. Low of 32 with wind gusts up to 20 miles per hour.
