A man was arrested early Tuesday after police say he shot his way into an assisted living facility, Alabama police said.
Birmingham police said the incident occurred at the Episcopal Place Independent Living Facility.
At approximately 7:52 a.m., South Precinct officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at Episcopal Place Independent Living Facility (1112 26th Street South). The facility has 141 apartments.
Officers learned an adult male entered the facility by shooting his way through a secured door. While officers were inside the building on the first floor, they heard the suspect fire shots. There were no residents on the first floor when the suspect entered the facility.
The dispatcher issued a max emergency call which brought officers from other precincts and units to the facility.
Officers observed damage to the ceiling in a 1st-floor room; they believed the suspect had gone up in the ceiling.
Officers communicated with the suspect; at around 8:25 a.m., officers took the suspect into custody. Officers transported the suspect to BPD Headquarters for questioning.
BPD officers did not fire any shots during this incident. There were no injuries to any resident, officer, or the suspect.
