EMT killed while assisting wreck victims after returning from Alabama hospital

A Mississippi EMT was struck and killed by a vehicle while assisting a victim of a wreck after taking another patient to an Alabama hospital.
According to a statement from ASAP EMS Operations Manager Rusty Hembree, Mary “Katie” Pipkins died Saturday.
“ASAP EMS mourns the loss of an amazing friend and colleague,” the statement reads.
Hembree said one of the ASAP crews was returning to their coverage area after transporting a patient to Mobile, Ala. While returning, the crew saw an auto accident scene and stopped to help. While helping one of the victims, Pipkins was struck by a passing vehicle.
“We as a company are heartbroken over the loss of such a beautiful soul,” the statement continues. “Miss Pipkins was a true hero in every way. Miss Pipkins set a standard in EMS for others to follow. Her love and compassion knew no bounds. She was an inspiration to her fellow coworkers and everyone that knew her.”
