A fiery car crash with a tree Wednesday left an elderly Alabama man dead and a woman passenger injured, state troopers said.

The accident happened at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Kelly Creek Road in St. Clair County, Alabama state troopers said.

Ivey L. Mason, 85, of Birmingham, was killed when the Jeep Cherokee he was driving left the road, struck a tree and caught fire, investigators said.

Troopers said Mason was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Passenger Sharon B. Mason, 83, was injured and taken to UAB Hospital. Her condition was not immediately released.
