Dixie Chicks founding member Laura Lynch killed in Texas car crash

A founding member of the Dixie Chicks band was killed Friday in a head-on collision in Texas, state police said.

Lynch, 65, was pronounced dead on the scene after an car attempting to pass struck her vehicle head-on on a two-lane highway near El Paso.

The accident remains under investigation.

Members of the band, now known as The Chicks, posted a statement on social media honoring Lynch’s memory.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks. We hold a special place in our hearts for the time we spent playing music, laughing and traveling together,” they wrote. “Laura was a bright light…her infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band. Laura had a gift for design, a love of all things Texas and was instrumental in the early success of the band.”

Lynch helped found the band in 1989, but was replaced in 1995 by Natalie Maines when the band shifted to more mainstream country music from their roots in bluegrass.
