Just days before Christmas, a 3-year-old Alabama boy apparently shot and killed himself while apparently playing with a gun he found, police said.

Birmingham police said the shooting happened at approximately 11:45 a.m. in the 7500 block of 2nd Avenue North.

Police said the child was pronounced dead at the scene and that they believed the gunshot to be self-inflicted.

Police said they’re investigating the matter and the boy’s mother was at home when the shooting occurred.
