An early morning shooting Saturday left one person dead and another hospitalized, Alabama police said.

Off-duty police officers who were working private jobs heard gunfire in the Lakeview District at approximately 3 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The officers moved to the sound of the gunfire and found two adult men on the ground next to a food truck in the 700 block of 29th Street South.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene by medics who responded. The other shooting victim was transported to UAB Hospital with what was described as life-threatening injuries.

Birmingham police investigators said they believe the two men got into an argument with some people and a gunfight broke out. Although bullets struck the food truck and reportedly large crowds were nearby. No one inside the food truck or others in the crowd were injured, police said.

Investigators were still working late Saturday morning to identify suspects.
