An Alabama 14-year-old was hospitalized Thursday evening after she was struck by a vehicle while she was crossing the road, police said.

The accident happened in Athens, Alabama, at approximately 5 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 31.

Police said the 14-year-old girl was trying to cross the highway when a motorist traveling south on U.S. 31 struck the girl near the intersection with Pryor Street.

The girl was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham by helicopter. He condition was not immediately known.

The driver stopped and stayed on the scene, police said.
