A reported car burglary turned into a gunfight in an Alabama city, police there report.

Officers were called at approximately 8:50 p.m. Tuesday to a residence in the 2500 block of 29th St Ensley, Birmingham police said.

As officers arrived they heard gunfire and then spotted two men outside the residence.

Police chased one of the men on foot until the man escaped.

Additional officer soon arrived, but the suspect could not be found.

Police said the investigation suggests two suspects were burglarizing a car at the residence when the homeowner spotted them and the two sides began shooting at one another.

Police said it appeared no one was actually struck by bullets during the shootout.

Police officials cautioned the public not to try and stop burglars due to the danger.

“The Birmingham Police Department wants the public to be aware it is not uncommon for car break-in suspects to be armed with a firearm,” police officials said.
