An Alabama man was killed Monday when his car veered of an interstate highway, struck a tree and burst into flames, state troopers said.

Jerry D. Gardner, 56, of Fairfield, Alabama, was killed in the crash that occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. Monday on Interstate 59 in Birmingham.

The accident happened at approximately 1:15 p.m. Monday, just south of Fairfield.

State troopers said Gardner’s Chevrolet Impala veered off the road, struck a tree and caught fire. Gardner was pronounced dead at the scene.
