A 5-year-old Alabama girl was found dead Monday in a laundry hamper, police said.

Exactly what happened was not immediately clear as police did not publicly release much information in the situation.

Trussville police said officers were called to a residence early Monday morning, at approximately 6:39 a.m.

It was unclear how long the child was inside the hamper or what exactly caused her death. The girl was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said, initially at least, they believe the girl’s death was an accident.
