Alabama woman killed as car strikes concrete mailbox, state troopers say

An Alabama was killed early Sunday when her car veered off the road, struck a fence and then a concrete mailbox, state troopers said.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 2:22 a.m. Sunday, and claimed the life of a Brantley woman.

Mary M. Burgans, 41, was fatally injured when the 2008 Honda Accord she was driving left the roadway struck a fence and then a concrete mailbox.

Burgans was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Robert W. Duncan, 46, of Brantley, a passenger in the Accord, was also not using a seat belt at the time of the crash, was injured and transported to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery for treatment.

The crash occurred on Alabama 87 near the 58 mile marker, approximately 2 miles south of Troy, in Pike County.
