A dead body found in an alley this week has been identified and was killed by a gunshot, authorities said Friday.

A utility worker stumbled on the dead body on Monday in an alley in one of Alabama’s largest cities.

Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said an autopsy of the body revealed the woman’s identity and that she died of a gunshot wound.

Yates said the victim was identified as Felicia Raquel Smith, 32, of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Smith was found in the 1500 block of Alabama Avenue SW in Birmingham, Yates said, at approximately noon on Monday.

Yates said Smith appears to have been shot and that Birmingham police are investigating the matter as a homicide.
