An Alabama utility worker stumbled on a dead body in an alley prompting a police investigation into the woman’s death.

Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the body was found just before noon on Monday in the 1500 block of Alabama Avenue SW in Birmingham.

A utility worker found the body in a grassy area along the shoulder of the alley.

The identity of the woman was not immediately clear, Yates said. The woman was described only as an adult female who was Black.

Birmingham police are investigating the matter, Yates said. An autopsy is scheduled for today in hopes of determining the woman’s identity as well as the cause and manner of her death.
