An Alabama man was killed Wednesday after a motorist struck him while he was riding a bicycle, state troopers reported.

The single-vehicle crash involving a bicyclist occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m. Wednesday, and claimed the life of an Athens, Alabama, man.

Charles S. Olney, 68, was critically injured when the bicycle that he was operating was struck in the roadway by a vehicle.

After the initial impact, the bicycle left the roadway and Olney was thrown off, troopers said.

The vehicle left the scene and the exact vehicle type, as well as the driver is still unknown.

Olney was transported to Athens Limestone Hospital where he later succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The crash occurred on Looney Road near Pine Road, approximately 6 miles north of Athens, in Limestone County.
