A man was killed Monday night after he led police on a chase through two counties before crashing his SUV, Alabama law enforcement authorities said.

The chase started at approximately 7:30 p.m. in Cullman County when Cullman County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on a driver.

The driver refused to stop and shots were fired at the pursuing deputies.

The chase continued into Jefferson County where additional law enforcement agencies joined the pursuit.

The driver eventually lost control of his Chevrolet Tahoe, causing it to flip over and roll multiple times near a gas station near the intersection of Morris Majestic Road and U.S. 31.

The driver was reportedly ejected in the accident.

The suspect has not been identified yet and an autopsy will determine the cause and manner of death, Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said.

Alabama state troopers are investigating the incident.
