Alabama’s governor said Thursday the state would send 275 Alabama National Guard troops to help with the southern border of the United States as a surge of immigrants cross the border.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey wrote of her decision on social media.

“Every state has become a border state under the current policies, and Alabama remains committed to being an integral part of the mission to protect our southern border,” Ivey wrote. “The Alabama National Guard always stands ready to protect our citizens, and I thank our 275 troops, as well as their families, for their important service to our country.”

Ivey joined dozens of other governors last month in a writing a letter intended to press The White House to address what they allege is a crisis at the southern border that is affecting states.
