A hit-and-run on a stretch of interstate in Alabama left a man dead and police searching for the driver who left the scene.

The accident happened at approximately 7:18 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 65 near Fourth Avenue South in Birmingham.

Officials with the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said the victim was walking in the interstate when he was struck by a motorist who did not stop.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and was described only as a black male.

Birmingham police are investigating the matter, but have not released the victim’s name nor any description of the suspect’s vehicle.
