An Alabama man accused of capital murder apparently took his own life in a county jail Sunday morning, local law enforcement officials said.
Capital murder suspect Bradley Wayne Stokes, 39, of Phenix City, was found unconscious in his cell after allegedly hanging himself, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said.
Jail staff members attempted to revive Stokes, but were unsuccessful.
He was pronounced dead just before 2 a.m. officials said.
“It appears Mr. Stokes took some strips of his sheet and asphyxiated from that,” Sheriff Taylor said.
Stokes was charged with the stabbing death of Treasure Hennessey and her unborn child at a Fort Mitchell fire station. Investigators said Hennessey had been hiding from Stokes at the time of her death and had been hiding at a fire station where a relative worked.
