Man found sleeping inside house killed in shootout, sheriff deputies say

An Alabama resident shot and killed a man found hiding inside a house, sheriff’s deputies said.

The incident happened at approximately 6:45 a.m. Wednesday when Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the 6600 block of Newbridge Cove in unincorporated Western Jefferson County on reports of a burglary in progress.

Upon arrival, deputies found a man was deceased.

The initial investigation suggests that the dead man had been hiding inside the home and was discovered by the homeowner.

The subject began to leave the residence but was confronted by another resident who was sleeping in a room near the exit.

Witnesses state that shots were exchanged between the deceased subject and the second resident.

Both people were struck by gunfire. The male resident was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives are currently interviewing the witnesses in this case and are working to identify the deceased subject.
