Loose tire crosses Alabama interstate, kills 18-wheeler driver in fiery crash

A loose tire that bounced into a truck driver’s windshield caused a fiery crash Monday afternoon, killing the truck driver, Alabama state troopers report.

The accident happened at approximately 3:40 p.m. Monday on Interstate 459 near Liberty Parkway, troopers reported.

The truck driver, Jeffrey E. Cane, 42, of North Littler Rock, Arkansas, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck crashed after a tire came off a Ford Explorer traveling in the southbound lanes and crossed the median and struck Cane’s windshield.

His Freightliner tractor-trailer left the interstate, crashed and caught fire, troopers said.

The driver of the Ford Explorer was identified as Anthony Hayes, 21, of Midfield.

The incident is under investigation, troopers said.
