An Alabama police officer was killed in a crash involving an 18-wheeler on Monday.

Marvin Wade Hart, 61, was killed when his pickup truck collided with a Publix 18-wheeler at the intersection of McAshan Road and Old Tuscaloosa Highway in McCalla.

The collision happened shortly before noon on Monday, according to officials with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Hart was a sergeant with the UAB Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit. He was also a military veteran.

Hart was off-duty when the collision happened.  He was transported to a regional hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
