A Virginia family stranded on a rural Alabama highway expressed their appreciation to an “angel” who came to their rescue after their vehicle broke down on the way to the beach.

Covington County Sheriff’s Office’s Sgt. Jerry Fields — who serves as a school resource officer at Florala and Lockhart schools — was on regular patrol on July 31 when a family traveling home to Virginia from their vacation in Destin found themselves stranded on AL Hwy. 137 with their vehicle and 37-foot travel trailer.

The family did not have cell service but were able to call 911.

Sgt. Fields was dispatched to the scene and helped the family get back on the road.

A letter written to the sheriff’s office read: “Sgt Fields calmed me down and stayed by our side while we tried to navigate our situation. As our truck and trailer were being towed, he drove myself and my children to a state park where we would be safe while the repairs were being made on our truck. He kept saying, he was just doing his job, but to me, it was more than that! He truly is an angel in disguise and I will forever be thankful that we crossed paths that day.”

Sheriff Blake Turman added,  “We are proud to have Sgt. Fields as part of the CCSO. This is just one example of how he does his job with amazing service to our county.”
