An Alabama teen has been charged in the shooting of a 6-year-old boy, police said.

Zaire Titnamus Hughes, 19, of Mobile, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and firing into an occupied building, Mobile police said Wednesday.

The shooting happened early Tuesday morning at the Summer Place Apartments. Police were called after a child was shot multiple times. The child was shot multiple times and was listed Tuesday in critical condition after surgery.

Police earlier said the child was not the target of the shooting, but that the shooting was not merely random either.
