Alabama police are investigating the shooting of a 6-year-old boy at an apartment complex.

Police said they do not believe the shooting was an accident, but that the boy was not the intended target.

Mobile police said the boy was shot at Summer Place Apartments on Azalea Road early Monday morning.

The boy was hospitalized and had to have surgery, police said.

The victim’s mother told a local TV news station that the child was sleeping when gunshots rang out.
