An Alabama senior high school student died Thursday due to a medical emergency during school.

Caleb Dylan White, 17, of Birmingham, was a student at Pinson Valley High School.

He was at school Thursday afternoon when he had a medical event at approximately 1:12 p.m. Life-saving measures were administered to him and he was taken to Saint Vincent’s East hospital where he was pronounced dead just over an hour later.

“It’s hard to lose any one of our members, whether it’s faculty, staff, or students, but it hits a little differently when it comes to one of our students, especially a senior in his senior year with his whole life ahead of him,” Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin said.

White played basketball for Pinson Valley.

Details about the nature of his medical emergency were not immediately clear. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death and an autopsy is planned.
