Alabama inmates picking up trash on highway struck, killed by motorist

Two Alabama state prison inmates were struck by a vehicle and killed while they worked on a road crew picking up trash, state officials said.

Details of the crash were not released, but the Alabama Department of Corrections said the inmates killed were Ronnie Steven Cornelius, 30, and Colt Eugene Morris, 40.

Cornelius was in prison for a robbery in Colbert County, and Morris was incarcerated for property theft from Escambia County.

The inmates were working on an Alabama Department of Transportation road crew picking up trash along Highway 278 in Marion County when the accident happened.

Alabama state troopers are investigating the details of the crash.
