An Alabama man was arrested Sunday night after police say he fired a gun into an apartment and then entered the apartment and kidnapped his 11-month-old son to which he did not have custody.

Vestavia Hills police said they were called at approximately 6:20 p.m. Sunday to the Grand Highland of Vestavia Hills apartment complex on Overton Road after receiving a call of shots fired and a possible kidnapping.

Officers arrived on scene and determined that a non-custodial parent shot into an apartment before entering and taking an 11-month-old child and fleeing the scene.

The child was safely recovered in Birmingham, Alabama a short time later and the suspect was arrested and is in custody in the Vestavia Hills jail.

Neither the mother or child sustained injuries during the incident. The suspect’s name will not be released until formally charged by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
