An Alabama mother has admitted to child abuse and falsely telling people her child had cancer to obtain donations for the child’s care.

Jessica Taylor of Elmore, Alabama, and her husband were initially charged each with a count of aggravated child abuse in January 2021. Prosecutors eventually dropped the charge against the husband citing a lack of evidence showing his involvement.

Taylor pleaded guilty to a class C felony child abuse charge, prosecutors said.

She faces up to 10 years in prison.

Prosecutors said Taylor did not physically abuse her child, but instead led the public to believe the child had cancer or other terminal diseases in an effort to raise money from the public.

Prosecutors said after having the child checked by medical professionals, they do not believe the child ever had cancer or any other terminal illness.
