A second Alabama woman who was struck by a truck as she walked along a highway in Florida has died, officials said.

The incident happened on July 6 in Century, Florida. Two women, both from Brewton, Alabama, were struck as they walked across Highway 29 in Century. They were in front of Vallarta restaurant at approximately 8:30 p.m. Locals say many people park across the street and walk to the restaurant.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said a Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by a Flat Rock, Alabama, man saw the pedestrians in the road and attempted to swerve, but struck Jessica Ann Mathis, 34.

Jenny Theresa Ackerman, 53, walked into the roadway to help Mathis and was subsequently struck by a 71-year-old Brewton, Alabama, man who said he didn’t see her.

Ackerman died the day after the crash. Mathis died at a Pensacola, Florida, hospital last week.

Neither the drivers or their passengers were injured, officials said. No charges have been filed.
