Just before a fatal wreck that claimed the life of a 10-year-old Alabama girl, police say someone threw items from the SUV as it sped away from a police officer attempting to stop it, police say.
Mountain Brook police said one of its officers observed a white SUV speeding on Old Leeds Road at approximately 5:27 p.m. Saturday.
After the vehicle turned onto Cherokee Road, the officer turned on his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and attempted to stop the driver.
“As the SUV continued at a high rate of speed, an occupant threw two items out of a driver’s side window, and within seconds, the SUV crashed in the 3400 block of Cherokee Road,” police said in a statement.
Three people — one adult and two juveniles — were injured in the wreck.
Annabelle Mullican, 10, of Mountain Brook, died a short time after the accident at Children’s of Alabama.
Exactly what was thrown from the vehicle was not clear.
None of the others inside the vehicle have been identified but police said the matter is still under investigation.
“As is true in every critical incident, the investigation takes time and requires thorough review of all facts. No arrests have been made, nor any charges filed,” police said in a written statement.
