Alabama Skies: Severe storms possible Sunday, Monday

Better rain chances Sunday won’t do much for overall temperatures, but there is a chance afternoon showers and storms could become strong to severe.

The Storm Prediction Center and National Weather Service has issued a Level 1 risk for severe weather across central and southern Alabama Sunday and Monday. The highest risks are for strong winds up to 60 miles per hour and hail with heavy rainfall. Rain chances are not great Sunday, but Monday could be a washout for many of us, especially in northern and central Alabama.

The rest of the week looks like we’ll have much better rain chances across the state. The pattern change will also bring slightly lower temperatures, but humidity levels will still be oppressive.

The disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean has weakened to having zero chance of development in the next few days, so the tropics are quite quiet for now.

North Alabama

Mostly sunny with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and evening. High of 99 and heat index of 107. Mostly cloudy Sunday night with a low of 73. Monday and Independence Day look like it will be quite soggy, especially in the afternoon.

Central Alabama

Partly sunny with scattered showers and storms in the afternoon. A storm or two could be severe. High of 97 with a heat index of 107. A few remaining showers and storms in the evening, becoming mostly cloudy overnight. Low of 73. More rain, especially in the afternoon, for Monday and July 4th.

South Alabama

Mostly sunny with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. A storm or two could be severe. High near 96 and heat index of 110. An isolated shower or storm in the evening, then becoming partly cloudy Sunday night. Low of 74. Storms will be more widespread on Monday and Tuesday.

Gulf Coast

Mostly sunny with scattered showers and storms in the afternoon. High near 94 and heat index of 106. Partly cloudy Sunday night with a low of 74.
