Alabama woman dies after head-on highway collision, state troopers say

An Alabama woman has died from injuries she sustained in a head-on collision Thursday, state troopers reported.

The two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. Thursday, and claimed the life of a Salem woman.

Barbara E. McElwain, 58, was critically injured when the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox she was driving collided head-on with the 2016 Ford Explorer driven by Hannah H. Jenkins, 30, of Phenix City.

McElwain was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was transported to Piedmont Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, Ga., for treatment.

McElwain later succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The crash occurred on U.S. 80 near the 20 mile marker, approximately two miles west of Phenix City, in Russell County.
