A shootout in an Alabama parking lot involving dozens of shots fired left one man dead and police looking for clues.

“We believe that a shootout took place in the 4400th block of 9th avenue north,” said Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

At approximately 8:10 PM, South Precinct officers began receiving multiple Shot Spotter alerts in the 800 Block of 44th Place North.

Police officers were alerted a person was shot in the 4400 Block of 9th Avenue North.

Officers entered a parking lot when they observed the victim lying unresponsive on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased. The man’s identity was not immediately released.

The preliminary investigation suggests there was an exchange of gunfire in the parking lot. We believe the victim was targeted in this shooting.

No one is in custody.
