Teen cyclist lost control, fell into traffic and was killed by garbage truck, police say

An Alabama teen who died Wednesday after being struck by a garbage truck had simply lost control of the electric bicycle he was riding on a sidewalk and fell into traffic, police said Thursday.

The accident happened at approximately 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday in the 200 block of Gulf Shores Parkway, Gulf Shores police investigators said.

A 13-year-old boy who was visiting from Gainestown, Alabama, was riding an electric bike on the sidewalk in the 200 block of Gulf Shores Parkway.

The juvenile was riding south bound when he lost control of the bike and fell into the southbound lane of traffic, investigators said.

A waste container truck was traveling southbound on Gulf Shores Parkway and struck the teen in the roadway.

A lifeguard with Gulf Shores Beach Rescue arrived on the scene almost immediately and attempted to provide aid.

Gulf Shores Fire Rescue were unable to resuscitate him. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is assisting with the investigation.
